- 892 hallucinations identified across 100 cities — restaurants recommended with confidence that do not exist on Google Places.
- Chains filtered out: All top picks are independently owned restaurants, not chains, regardless of how frequently AI recommended them.
Best Picks Across All Cities
The top independent restaurant in each cuisine category across all 100 cities, selected by Bayesian quality score first (Google rating weighted by review count vs. dataset mean), then AI accuracy score, then local recommendation frequency as a final tiebreaker. Only restaurants that exist, are currently open, are located in the correct city, and are independently owned qualify.
Methodology
For each of the 100 cities, we submitted identical prompts to ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Google Gemini, and Perplexity asking for top independent restaurant recommendations in five categories: pizza, Italian, Mexican, sushi, and burgers. Each model was queried multiple times per city-cuisine pair to measure consistency.
Every recommended restaurant was verified via the Google Places API v1 to confirm existence, open status, cuisine type, location, and ownership. This produced two separate scoring systems — one grading the AI per city, one ranking the restaurants the AI got right.
Scoring Method 1: City IQ Score (0–100)
City IQ measures how accurately AI models recommend restaurants for a given city as a whole. It is a composite of six factors across all verified recommendations in that market.

A City IQ of 89 (Chicago) means AI recommendations for that city are highly reliable. A score of 57 (Charleston, WV) means a significant portion were hallucinated, wrong cuisine, or in the wrong location.
Scoring Method 2: Individual Restaurant Pick Selection
Top picks are the best independently-owned restaurants that AI accurately recommended within a city and cuisine. Only restaurants passing all four eligibility gates qualify — then survivors are ranked by three criteria in order:

Top picks are selected algorithmically using three ranked criteria: (1) Bayesian quality score — Google rating weighted by review count vs. the dataset mean, so a 4.9★ from 50 reviews does not beat a 4.7★ from 10,000; (2) AI accuracy score — how precisely AI described the restaurant across existence, location, cuisine type, and independence; (3) local recommendation frequency — how many times multiple AI models independently recommended the same restaurant for its home city. Only independent (non-chain) restaurants that exist, are currently open, and are in the correct city qualify.
